Unemployment rate declines in region
The unemployment rate in the Utica-Rome area declined from 3.4% in April 2022 to 2.8% in April 2023. The unemployment rate was 3.6% in March.
Change in non-farm jobs since March
For the 12-month period ending April 2023, the non-farm job count in the Utica-Rome metro increased 1,600, or 1.3%, to 121,900. Private sector employment rose 1,400, or 1.5%, to 92,000.
Job gains were posted in: private education and health services, plus 900; leisure and hospitality, plus 700; government, plus 200; financial activities, plus 100; manufacturing, plus 100; and other services, plus 100.
Professional and business services, minus 300; natural resources, mining, and construction, minus 100; and trade, transportation, and utilities, minus 100; declined over the year.
County rankings
• Oneida County ranked at 29 of 62 counties in the state for its unemployment rate which was 2.7% in April.
• Madison County ranked at 27 with an unemployment rate of 2.6%.
• Herkimer County ranked 46 with an unemployment rate of 3.2%.
• Lewis County ranked 56 with an unemployment rate of 3.7%, according to the state Bureau of Labor Statistics.
