Unemployment declined over the past year in Rome-Utica area
The unemployment rate in the Utica-Rome area declined from 4.0% in March 2022 to 3.6% in March 2023. The unemployment rate was 4.1% in February.
Change in non-farm jobs since February
For the 12-month period ending in March, the non-farm job count in the Utica-Rome area increased 2,200, or 1.8%, to 121,800. Private sector employment rose 2,500, or 2.8%, to 91,900.
Job gains were posted in: private education and health services, plus 1,200; leisure and hospitality, plus 700; manufacturing, plus 300; trade, transportation, and utilities, plus 200; financial activities, plus 100; and natural resources, mining, and construction, plus 100.
Government, minus 300; and professional and business services, minus 100, declined over the year.
County rankings
• Oneida County ranked at 23 of 62 counties in the state for its unemployment rate which was 3.5% in March.
• Madison County ranked at 32 with an unemployment rate of .37%.
• Herkimer County ranked 47 with an unemployment rate of 4.3%.
• Lewis County ranked 59 with an unemployment rate of 5.3%, according to the state Bureau of Labor Statistics.
