Unbeaten MVCC women’s tennis team heading to nationals

The Mohawk Valley Community College women’s tennis team is moving on to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III National Championship after completing an undefeated regular season and winning Region III.

“It’s a good group of girls,” MVCC head coach Nick Evanoff said. “They’re easy and fun to coach. They all have the ability to play at the four-year level.”

The Hawks left Wednesday morning for Peachtree City, Ga., and they will begin play on Friday. The tournament runs through Sunday.

Featured locals on the team are Rome Free Academy graduate and sophomore Callie Ott, sophomores and Holland Patent graduates Sara Mierek and Jackie Mann, sophomores and Utica Proctor graduates Selma Dizdarevic and Elina Brutsky and freshman and Poland graduate Julia Cucci. Also on the team are sophomore Sahida Be, and freshmen Emily Clemons and Cailynn Patterson.

The Hawks went 6-0 this season to win the region and to punch their ticket to nationals. They won the regional championship by a score of 9-0 over Hudson Valley and Herkimer. The title followed the team’s spring 2021 Regional Championship.

“It’s exciting,” Evanoff said. “To see the team compete at the national level is exciting.”

Evanoff became the coach of the women’s tennis team last season, but when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the season was postponed. This season is his first full one at the helm.

“I’m excited to see what happens,” Evanoff said. “There’s a couple of girls that could win individual titles and we have a shot to win a team title.”
