Unbeaten Camden top seed in Section III Class B softball playoffs; Oriskany seeded second in Class D

Camden softball’s 20-0 regular season has earned the Blue Devils the top seed in the Section III Class B playoff bracket. In Class D, Oriskany, which made it to the state title game last season, is the second seed.

Camden softball’s 20-0 regular season has earned the Blue Devils the top seed in the Section III Class B playoff bracket. In Class D, Oriskany, which made it to the state title game last season, is the second seed.

In Class B, there were six games in the opening round Monday. Results were not available at press time. Clinton (7-12) lost to visiting Holland Patent (7-12) in the matchup of the 16 and 17 seeds 22-1 in five innings. HP advances to play at Camden at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The Blue Devils have barely been challenged this season, with a 1-0 win against Class A New Hartford early in the season, as well as 5-3 against Class AA Cicero-North Syracuse and 1-0 at Class AA Baldwinsville mid-season. The team has piled up 294 runs while allowing 40.

Locally, Oneida (8-10) hosted Phoenix (3-16) in the matchup of the 12 and 21 seeds Monday. The winner of that plays at five seed Westhill (10-7) at 5 p.m. today. Eleven seed Central Valley Academy (10-10) hosted 22 seed Mexico (3-13) Monday, with the winner traveling to sixth-seeded Adirondack (13-3) at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Also in Class B, Utica-Notre Dame (12-5) hosts ninth-seeded Solvay (14-4) Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Class AA

Rome Free Academy (7-12) is the three seed and hosts sixth-seeded Baldwinsville (10-10) at 5 p.m. on Thursday. The winner advances to play Saturday at 1 p.m. against the winner of two seed Cicero-North Syracuse (8-12) and seven seed Fayetteville-Manlius (5-11).

Class A

There are two local teams in the Class A playoffs — two seed New Hartford and three seed Whitesboro.

New Hartford (14-3-1) hosts the winner of Tuesday’s game between seven seed Oswego (8-8) and 10 seed Fulton (6-10) at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Whitesboro (12-6) hosts six seed Central Square (10-9) at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Class C

Little Falls played Monday in one of two opening round games. The 18th-seeded Mounties (7-10) were at 15 seed Weedsport (5-13). The winner advances to play at two seed Sandy Creek (15-2) at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The highest local seed in the class is seven seed Westmoreland (12-5), which hosts 10 seed Cato-Meridian (10-6) at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Ninth-seeded Herkimer (12-7) plays at eight seed Port Byron (15-4) Tuesday at 5 p.m. Mount Markham (6-8) plays at sixth-seeded Thousand Islands (13-2) at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Sauquoit Valley (5-9), the 14 seed, plays at three seed Cooperstown (13-2) Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Class D

Oriskany (14-4) awaits the winner of the game between 15 seed Lyme (3-13) and 18 seed Bishop Ludden (1-15) that was Monday. The Oriskany game is at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

West Canada Valley (12-3), the four seed, hosts 13th-seeded Belleville-Henderson (5-13) at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Poland (12-4), the seven seed, hosts Hamilton (10-7), at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Walkoff win for Oriskany

Juliet Tagliaferri stepped up in a big spot for the Oriskany softball team.

After seventh-grader Koley VanVechten doubled in the bottom of the seventh inning senior belted a wal-off triple to help Oriskany rally for a 3-2 victory over visiting Poland on Friday.

With the win, Oriskany claimed the Center State Conference Division III regular season title. The team finished 14-4 overall in the regular-season.

Oriskany trailed 2-0 into the bottom of the third before getting a run in the third and the sixth to tie.

“Honestly, since I’ve been at Oriskany we’re never out of it,” coach Mike Reilly said. “It is just another great group kids.”

He said Tagliaferri was “due” at the plate. After she belted the ball to right field and made it safely to third, Tagliaferri celebrated with Reilly with a high five.

Oriskany was the state runner-up in Class D last year and has another close group. The team has two seventh-graders, an eighth-grader and two freshmen. Tagliaferri and Alonai Roberts, Kaylee Burnop are seniors.

“I’m confident in them. We just play good defense. They’re very confident,” Reilly said. “The upperclassmen are great to them. They’re like sisters.”

Tagliaferri pitched the complete game for the win. She struck out six while giving up six hits and no walks. 

Brooke Matys was 2-for-3 for Oriskany with a double and a triple and a RBI. Megan Wright was 1-for-2 with a RBI. 

“(Matys) is very athletic,” Reilly said, noting she can hit from both sides.

In the bottom of the seventh inning with the score tied 2-2 and one out Koley VanVechten doubled then Juliet Tagliaferri hit a walk off triple. 

Shelbi Hagues took the pitching loss for Poland. Logan Cookingham and Sarah Zuchowski doubled for Poland.

HP wins big

Holland Patent beat visiting Thomas R. Proctor High 20-4 on Saturday in the Tri-Valley League.

Statistics for HP were not submitted.

Proctor’s Adrianna Peterson doubled twice and tripled with an RBI and a run scored.

Caroli, Crysler lead Oneida

Julianna Caroli had two hits including a double and drove in two while Oneida teammate Kerrigan Crysler allowed two unearned runs in a complete game, 6-2 win at Canastota Friday in non-league play.

Crysler allowed six hits and walked no batters while striking out 11. She also had a hit and two runs scored on offense. Alexis DeGroat had a hit and two RBIs in the win.

Canastota’s Breeah Shaw took the loss in a complete game effort. She allowed six earnd runs on six hits and nine walks. She struck out 11. Helen Shear had three hits including a triple with two runs scored for the Raiders.

Oneida ends the regular season 8-10.

Westmoreland tops Herkimer

Samantha Ferguson had a four-hit day as part of Westmoreland’s 14-hit performance in a 9-1 win at home over Herkimer Friday on senior night in a CSC crossover.

Ferguson singled three times, tripled, drove in two and scored three times. Lily Mazur had three hits including a double with three runs. Molly Nestved and Olivia Moore both had two hits and two RBIs.

Jenna Tyczynski earned the complete game win with four hits allowed and three walks.

Herkimer’s Dani Gilbert had a hit and the team’s lone RBI.

Jenna Riesel took the loss, allowing seven earned runs and striking out eight in a complete game.

Westmoreland, the Division II champion, finishes the regular season at 12-5.

Herkimer was 11-6 this season.

Quiet bats in RFA loss

The Rome Free Academy offense was limited to three hits in a 4-2 loss at home to Central Square Friday.

Central Square scored two in the top of the fouth but RFA scored twice in the bottom of the inning to tie. But the visitors scored two more the following inning and held on to win.

RFA’s Lex Thompson had a hit and an RBI. Kenidee Campbell had a hit and scored a run.

Madison Safin allowed four runs (two earned) in seven innings on eight hits and two walks. She struck out three.
