U-R Speedway season opener rained out again

VERNON — Utica-Rome Speedway officials late this morning canceled tonight’s scheduled season opener due to rain and wet grounds.

The midweek show was scheduled to serve as the track’s season opener after four previous scheduled Sunday racing cards were washed out due to rain and wet grounds.

Instead, the season opener was rained out for the fifth time.

Tonight’s program was scheduled to include a regular show of DIRTcar 358-Modifieds, DIRTcar Sportsman, DIRTcar Pro Stocks and the Rookie Sportsman. It was also to have been the first points event of the season.

The season opener on the main track at the Speedway is now scheduled Sunday, May 26, during Memorial Day Weekend. The program will feature an appearance by the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints.

The first of three events on the Utica-Rome Kartway is scheduled this coming Sunday. Racing starts at 1 p.m. Gates open at 10 a.m., and hot laps are scheduled at noon. Additional U-R Kartway events are scheduled Sunday, June 30, and Sunday, July 14, in place of racing programs on the main track.
