SALUTE TO SURVIVORS: Two-time survivor says ‘listen to your instincts’

Posted

FORESTPORT — Dawn Pfendler, of Forestport, was diagnosed with breast cancer not once, but twice within four years. She encourages all women to get their mammograms and to do self-breast exams.

When were you diagnosed, what age and what stage?

I was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer in June 2017 when I was 48 years old. The second time it was stage 1 invasive cancer in August 2021 when I was 52.

How was your cancer initially detected?

Both through mammograms.

What was your treatment process?

The first cancer, chemotherapy. The second cancer, a double mastectomy.

What message would you like to provide others in the community?

Self-breast exams are a must. Follow up with your doctor when anything feels or looks different. Know your body and listen to your instincts. Never feel like you are alone when you get a diagnosis of cancer. The Breast Cancer Society, unfortunately, is a big one, and they are most willing to lend their support.

Are you a breast cancer survivor, or do you know someone who is? As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Daily Sentinel is saluting survivors in this daily feature throughout October. To be featured, email Pam Sperbeck at PSperbeck@RNYmedia.
