Two suffer minor injuries as off-duty deputy's gun goes off in Camden restaurant

VILLAGE OF CAMDEN — Two people suffered minor injuries after a handgun accidentally went off at the Grape N Grog restaurant in Camden Saturday afternoon, according to law enforcement officials.

State police said an off-duty Otsego County sheriff’s deputy was at the Grape N Grog when the handgun in his pocket accidentally discharged shortly before 7 p.m. The identity of the deputy was not released. Troopers also did not say if the weapon was privately owned or was the deputy’s duty weapon.

Troopers said the bullet went through the bottom of the deputy’s pocket and ricocheted off the floor. A 10-year-old girl suffered cuts to her right thigh and elbow, and a 38-year-old woman suffered an injury to her right foot. Authorities said both injuries were minor.

State police said there was no malice or intent in the gunfire, that the shot had been accidental.

The investigation is continuing.
