Two face weapons charges following Rome traffic stop

Two men have been charged with felony weapon possession after a loaded handgun was found during a traffic stop on North James Street shortly after midnight on Friday, according to law enforcement officials.

Police said Anthony G. Roberts, 30, of West Liberty Street, was pulled over for driving an uninspected vehicle and for having plastic coverings on both license plates at about 12:30 a.m. Friday. Once stopped, police said they could see open alcohol containers in the vehicle, along with a .9mm handgun on the floor of the back seat.

Roberts and passenger Kevin A. Monroe, 27, of Erie Street, Utica, are both charged with one count each of second-degree possession of a weapon, a class C felony, and an open container violation, police said. Roberts was additionally ticketed for improper plates and uninspected vehicle. Both men are scheduled to appear in City Court.
