LOWVILLE — Two people are dead following a fire in Lewis County late Saturday night.
Fire officials said multiple calls were received at about 11:49 p.m. Saturday for a fire at 7525 S. State St. Officials said an adult male was rescued from the front porch, and fire crews searched the rest of the multi-unit dwelling.
Two bodies were discovered on the second-floor of the residence, fire and police officials said.
The residence was home to multiple families, according to officials, who added the American Red Cross is providing them with emergency assistance.
Volunteers from four fire departments battled the blaze for several hours, officials said. The residence sustained extensive damage. Fire officials said cold temperatures hampered the firefight.
The man rescued off the porch was taken to Lewis County General Hospital for burns and smoke inhalation, authorities said. An autopsy has been scheduled for the two upstairs victims. Their identifies have not yet been released.
The state Office of Fire Prevention and Control was called to assist in the ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire.
The Lowville, Martinsburg, Castorland and New Bremen fire departments responded to the scene.
