Two charged with 2020 stolen firearm
ONEIDA — Two people have been charged with stealing a gun in Oneida after a recent tip helped re-open a cold case from 2020, according to the Oneida Police Department.
Police said Colin P. Chesebro, 20, and a 16-year-old stole the gun from a residence in the city in October 2020. Police said they did not know their identities at the time and the investigation went cold, with no arrests made.
In the summer of 2022, police said they received a tip about the stolen gun, and that investigation led to identifying Chesebro and the juvenile. Police said the pair worked together to steal the gun and then sold it to a third party.
Chesebro was charged on Jan. 12 with one count each of third-degree criminal possession of a firearm, third-degree criminal sale of a firearm, fourth-degree grand larceny, third-degree criminal facilitation, fourth-degree possession of stolen property and fourth-degree conspiracy, all felonies, police said. Chesebro is in Oneida County Jail on unrelated charges, and authorities said he was returned to the jail to await his next appearance in Oneida City Court.
The 16-year-old, whose identity was not released due to their young age, was charged in December and is scheduled to appear before the Madison County Probation Department.
Police said the firearm has not yet been recovered and the case remains under investigation. Additional arrests and charges are possible.
