Two arrested in separate shootings in Utica, police report

UTICA — Two Utica men were taken into custody on Wednesday for separate shooting incidents in the city, according to law enforcement officials.

• Police said Malcom Cummings, 30, of Utica, shot a man in the leg in the 1200 block of Walnut St. at about 5 a.m. Officers responded and authorities said Cummings fled into a nearby residence.

Police said the SWAT team was dispatched and a perimeter was set up around the residence.

Police said Cummings came out and he was taken into custody on one count each of second-degree assault and second-degree possession of a weapon.

He is scheduled to appear in City Court. The victim was treated at a local hospital.

• On July 5 at the intersection of James Street and Seymour Avenue, police said several people were involved in a shootout.

Police said one man was shot in the back of the head while sitting inside of a vehicle.

The shooter remains on the loose.

Police said a passenger in the vehicle, 22-year-old Idris Brown, of Utica, has been taken into custody. Police said Brown fired several shots from his passenger seat during the shootout.

Brown is charged with one count each of second-degree possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm, as well as an open criminal mischief warrant, police stated. He is scheduled to appear in City Court.

The July 5 shootout remains under investigation.
