ROME — A Rome man is accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl over the course of several months, according to the New York State Police.

Troopers said Michael E. Fox, 44, sexually abused a girl under the age of 17 in the City of Rome between the winter of 2020 and the summer of 2021. Troopers said the abuse was reported in March 2022, launching the investigation. The case was then presented to a grand jury earlier this month and Fox was indicted.

An indictment is a formal charge made against a person by a grand jury. It does not establish guilt or remove the presumption of innocence.

Fox was taken into custody on the indictment on Thursday. Troopers said Fox is charged with five counts of predatory sexual assault against a child, a class A-2 felony, three counts of first-degree rape, a class B felony, two counts each of first-degree criminal sexual act and first-degree sex abuse, both felonies, and one count each of attempted first-degree rape and endangering the welfare of a child. Fox is scheduled to appear in Oneida County Court. The victim has been offered counseling.
