Troopers, police to enforce Memorial Day crackdown
The state police and local law enforcement agencies will be cracking down on drunken and dangerous driving over the Memorial Day weekend.
The crackdown started on Friday and will run through 3 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31, the law enforcers have announced.
The STOP-DWI enforcement will see an increase in law enforcement patrols and sobriety checkpoints. State police will be using both marked patrol cars and unmarked vehicles as they search for drunk, impaired and reckless driving.
“Impaired driving is a reckless, dangerous choice that puts far too many people at risk of costly and possibly deadly consequences,” said Governor Kathy Hochul in a release.
“As we prepare to travel and get together with friends and family for Memorial Day weekend, I urge all motorists to drive responsibly and plan for a safe ride home. Don’t get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking so you can enjoy your weekend without endangering yourself or others.”
On Memorial Day weekend in 2021, state police arrested 185 people for drunken driving and issued 9,214 tickets.
Troopers investigated 163 motor vehicle accidents across the state, including two fatalities.
