ROUNDUP: High school golfers qualify for state tourney, Camden softball, Utica-Notre Dame softball

Three high school golfers from the Mohawk Valley qualified for the state tournament Friday.

New Hartford’s Cam Jenkins, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Caleb Decker and Waterville’s Gabe Williams each earned a spot in the tournament after finishing among the top nine players following the second round of the Section III state qualifier at Skenandoa Golf Course in Clinton.

Jenkins shot a 77 in the second round to finish with 152, which was the second-lowest score among the 22 golfers who had advanced to the second day.

Westhill’s Anthony Maglisco who had the best score (74) after the first round, finished with a tournament-low 148.

Decker was sixth with a 156 total. He shot a 76 on Friday. Williams was tied for seventh with a 157 total after shooting an 80 on Friday.

The state tournament is scheduled for Sunday, June 5, and Monday, June 6 at the Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira.

Camden softball on to the semifinals

The third-seeded Camden Blue Devils softball team defeated Christian Brothers Academy 9-4 Thursday to advance to the Section III Class B semifinals.

CBA scored a first inning run and led 3-0 in the middle of the third. Then the Camden offense woke up, scoring three to tie in the third and adding four in the fourth to go up 7-4. The Devils added two more in the fifth to pad the lead.

Ryleigh Johnson went the distance to earn the win. She allowed four runs, two of them earned, on five hits and four walks. She struck out seven. She also had three hits and an RBI on offense.

Brooke Musch had a double and triple with two runs and three RBIs for Camden. Katie McCarthy had two hits, two runs and an RBI.

Juliette Zimmerman took the loss, allowing nine runs, seven of them earned, on a dozen hits and three walks.

Camden improves to 17-3 and will take on two seed Auburn (17-4) at 1:30 p.m. today at Ray Middle School in Baldwinsville for a spot in the championship game.

Jugglers’ Cinderella run continues

Ella Trinkaus allowed one hit and struck out 11 as the 17 seed Utica-Notre Dame softball team shut out Weedsport 6-0 Thursday to earn a spot in the Section III Class C semifinals.

Vita Waters had three hits, a run and an RBI in the win. Ava Hayes had two hits and scored. Sam Paparella had two hits and drove in a run.

Statistics for Weedsport were not provided.

The Jugglers improved to 12-9 and will take on four-seed West Canada Valley (17-2) at 11 a.m. today at Onondaga Community College.
