Toccolana Club awards scholarships to three

The Toccolana Club, 1412 E. Dominick St., has awarded scholarship to three graduating Rome Free Academy seniors, according to an announcement by club officials.

The recipients of the annual awards, the club said, are Victoria Passalacqua, Joseph Mellace and Laura Izzo. Each was awarded a $500 scholarship.

The Toccolana Club was established in 1925 as a social club by Italian immigrants from the village of Tocco da Casauria in the Province of Pescara in the Abruzzo Region of Italy. The club has evolved over the years, and includes members of virtually all ethnic groups.

In addition to providing a place for socialization, the club provides a venue for bocce — a traditional lawn bowling game originating in Italy. The game is now played on courts using a fine stone dust base. There are 15 bocce courts at the Toccolana Club hosting several men’s, women’s and co-ed leagues, as well as the annual World Series of Bocce. Information online at
