The Rome Free Academy girls indoor track team ran to a fourth-place finish at the Section III Class AA championships on Thursday at the SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College.
Fayetteville-Manlius won the event with a score of 141 points. RFA finished with a score of 64.50.
Winning sectional crowns for the Black Knights were Sarah Crockett in the shot put and Sydney Lewis in the pole vault. Crockett also finished in second place in the weight throw and the 800 meter relay team of Lewis, Olivia Griggs, Mattison Hunt and Amara Jowers finished in second.
Coming in third place for RFA was Gabrielle Rameriz in the weight throw and Grace Isherwood in the shot put. Griggs ran to a fourth place finish in the 55 dash and Gianna Capoccia came in fourth in the 3,000 run.
Coming in fifth place for RFA was Marian Draper in the 1,500 run, Hunt in the high jump, Griggs in the long jump and the 3,200 relay team of Draper, Capoccia, Moriah Humiston and Avery Hilderbran. Isherwood finished in sixth place in the weight throw.
Swavely leads Rome boys squad
The RFA boys track team finished in eighth place at the Section III meet at SRC Arena with a score of 26. Baldwinsville won the boys meet with a final score of 158.
Ryan Swavely won the sectional championship in the weight throw for the Black Knights and finished in third place in the shot put. Isaha Garner finished in second place in the long jump for RFA and the 800 relay team of Julian Almestica, Alexander Sticca, Matthew Meyers and Garner ran to a fifth place finish.
Falcons soar to second in Class C-D meet
In the girls Section III Classes C/D meet, South Lewis finished in second place behind eventual winner Tully. Tully won the event with a score of 116 and South Lewis finished with a final score of 95. Oriskany also competed in the event and finished in ninth place with a score of 20.
Winning for the Falcons were Hali Ielfield in the 300 run and the 600 run. Other winners for South Lewis included the 1,600 relay team of Morgan Feisthamel, Elizabeth Klossner, Morgan Kogut and Aaliyah Williams and the 3,200 relay team of Lexi Bernard, Feisthamel, Brooke Platt and Williams.
Other finishers for the Falcons included Hali Ielfield coming in second in the 1,000 run and Hannah Ielfield finished in fourth place in the 1,000 run. Hannah Ielfield finished in second place and Bernard came in fourth place in the 1,500 run. In the 3,000 run, Hannah Ielfield and Bernard finished in second and third place respectively.
Isabella Sabatini finished in third place in the pole vault and Kendra Grabowski finished in second in the shot put and fifth in the weight throw.
For Oriskany, Audi Silvestri won the 55 hurdles and finished in third in the 300 run.
Oriskany boys come in third
The Oriskany boys indoor track team ran to a third place with a final score of 55. Tully won the meet with a final score of 115.
Winning for the Redskins were Alex Waterman in the 1,000 run, the 3,200 relay team of Josh Smoulcey, Waterman, Geo Silvestri and Ryan Fish.
The 800 relay team of Pablo Rodriguez, John Domenico, NeDavius Ladmirault and Wesley Appler finished in second and Silvestri also finished second in the 3,200 and fourth in the 1,600 run. Fish came in third in the 1,600 run and fourth in the 1,000 run. Dylan Dunning finished in fifth place in the shot put. Oriskany’s 1,600 relay team of Josh Macera, Gavin Reid, Derek Balfe and Josh Smoulcey came in sixth place.
In a Section III Class B girls volleyball contest, No. 5 seed Oneida advanced to the semifinals with a 3-2 victory over No. 4 seed Central Valley Academy after dropping the first two sets. Set scores were 16-25, 25-27, 25-11, 25-20 and 25-18.
Zoey Fox had two aces, 28 assists, 16 digs and two kills for the Indians and Megan Friske had two aces, 20 digs and two kills.
Oneida moves on to play the winner of the No. 1 seed Chittenango and the winner of the No. 8 seed South Jefferson and No. 9 seed Clinton on Tuesday at 6.
RFA swept by ES-M
The No. 6 seed RFA girls volleyball teams season came to an end in the quarterfinals of the Section III Class A tournament after being swept 3-0 by No. 3 seed East Syracuse-Minoa. Set scores were 25-4, 25-10 and 25-16. Casey Hunziker finished with four assists, two blocks and four digs for the Black Knights in the loss and Victoria Sestito added five kills and two blocks.
Indians win in five sets
In a boys Tri-Valley League volleyball match, Oneida defeated Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, 3-2. Set scores were 25-21, 27-25, 18-25, 23-25 and 16-14. Justin Holmes had three aces, nine kills, 34 assists and eight digs and Drew Fiedler had nine kills, 23 assists, five blocks and nine digs. Noah Savage added 22 kills, six blocks and seven digs for Oneida in the win. For VVS, Owen Rose had seven kills, 18 assists, seven blocks and eight digs.
