ROME — A 23-year-old man is accused of using the self-checkout lane to shoplift from Hannaford Supermarket on multiple occasions in 2021, according to the Rome Police Department.

Police said Brandon M. Deraway, of Rome, and Kaylee R. Bennett, 24, of Rome, used the self-checkout lane on 13 separate occasions between June and October 2021 to shoplift groceries and other items. The store provided police with surveillance footage, and the evidence was turned over to Rome City Court.

A pair of warrants were issued, and police said Deraway was taken into custody on the warrant this week on one count of second-degree scheme to defraud, a misdemeanor. Bennett had previously been picked up on her warrant in April 2022.

Deraway is scheduled to appear in Rome City Court.
