Thaw forces Ice Harvest to be canceled

Inconsistent winter weather has once again forced the Millers Mills Ice Harvest to be canceled. Within three days time a beautiful “crop” of ice drew away from the pond, parking lots became muddy and the snow pack needed for sleighs vanished.

More rain and no serious snow in the forecast for the remainder of the week leaves the Grange with no choice but to cancel once again, officials said.

The ice harvest was scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 10. The Millers Mills Grange, which sponsors the event, is one of the few remaining in Herkimer County. The annual ice harvest began as a necessity, was reborn as a fun community event, and grew into a hands on history lesson for the public after Charles Kuralt attended the ice harvest and gave the event national recognition on his TV show, “On the Road with Charles Kuralt.”

The lack of ice will have no effect on the Grange’s Ice Cream Social and Sundae Run next summer. For information on these events, please visit the Millers Mills Grange website, or facebook page in the spring.
