Teens accused of starting fire inside New Hartford store

Two juveniles have been charged with arson after law enforcers said they started a fire at the Dollar Tree in the Hannaford Plaza, on Utica’s east side.

Police said the pair started a fire inside the store at about 1 p.m. Sunday, and the flames quickly spread throughout the building. Police said the pair were spotted fleeing through the Hannaford Plaza by store employees, and they were eventually tracked down and taken into custody.

The Utica Fire Department responded to the Mohawk Street store and made an aggressive interior attack.

Fire officials said they knocked down the flames in about an hour and a half.

Authorities said the Dollar Tree sustained extensive damage and inventory loss as a result of the fire. Several other stores in the plaza also reported loss and damages.

Police said the juveniles are both charged with one count each of second-degree arson, a class B felony. Their identities have not been released due to their young ages. Police said the pair were taken to a detention facility to await an appearance in Family Court.

The investigation is ongoing.
