Syracuse players Williams, Copeland now part of Sitrin Wheelchair Basketball game
UTICA — Two different Syracuse men's basketball players are now involved with the Sitrin Foundation's 19th annual Celebrity Classic Wheelchair Basketball game next month in Utica.
The organization announced Wednesday that Syracuse standouts Benny Williams and Quadir Copeland will now headline the event that is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20, at Utica University's Clark Athletic Center.
Proceeds from the event support Sitrin’s STARS adaptive sports program, according to a news release. The proceeds will fund the purchase of new sports wheelchairs and equipment, and help offset training and competition expenses for STARS athletes, the release said.
Previously, Joseph Girard III and Judah Mintz had been announced as participating in the event. However, both have declared for the upcoming NBA draft while also maintaining their college eligibility. Girard has also entered the transfer portal and is drawing interest from other schools, according to reports.
Williams finished Syracuse's season fourth overall on the team’s scoring list while leading the Orange in three-point field goal percentage. Copeland was an option off the bench for Syracuse as a freshman.
Also joining this year’s celebrity team are Syracuse University men's soccer players Jeorgio Kocevski and Olu Oyegunle for the first time. Both were regular starters for the Orange, which claimed the NCAA title last fall.
Two fans will have a chance to compete against Williams and Copeland in a three-point competition during halftime, according to the release. There will also be a silent auction of sports memorabilia, a 50/50 raffle, and free autographs during the second half of the game.
Tickets are $10 for adults 18 years of age and older and $5 for students of any age. Children younger than five years old are free. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. For ticket information, visit www.sitrin.com/celebrityclassic.
