Sylvan Beach landmark, Crazy Clam, reopens under new ownership

SYLVAN BEACH — The Crazy Clam has been a namesake in Sylvan Beach for over two decades before closing in 2019. The restaurant and bar has now reopened, offering pub-fare and lakeside ambience under new ownership.

The iconic clam mascot and name will stay, but there’s some newness to the business that owner Shane Carney hopes visitors will enjoy. In addition to an updated interior look and refreshed menu, the biggest draw is extended patio seating, Carney said.

The owner has reported busy nights and receiving positive feedback from the community since opening over a month ago.

Menu items include appetizers like wings and fried/steamed clams; sandwiches, wraps, and po’ boys; salads; pasta; seafood; burgers; and a selection for hungry young ones. People are big fans of the tacos, Carney shared.

Food service is nothing new to Carney, who has owned Pizza Boys since 2007 with a location first in Herkimer then in New York Mills. Serving pizza is one thing, and now he’s getting his feet wet with more sit-down service in a beachside town, he said.

“Most people are happy that we’ve kept the Clam and it’s here, because it’s a place that they’ve been going to for years and they have a lot of memories here,” Carney said.

Opening the popular summer joint wouldn’t have been as successful without the help of the former Crazy Clam staff, Carney said. “The former staff was a huge help — the bartenders, servers, and food runners that came back. They were amazing when it came down to it to getting us opened up and a system down.”
