SUNY Poly women's basketball falls in NCAA Division III tournament


The SUNY Poly women's basketball team's season ended in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Amherst jumped out to a quick start and never relinquished the lead en route to a 60-42 win over SUNY Poly in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament Friday in Amherst, Mass.

Marcy-based SUNY Poly, led by coach Jessica Skelton, had a 10-game win streak snapped and finishes with a 20-7 record. The Wildcats earned their fifth conference championship in six seasons by winning the North Atlantic Conference title. That helped the team earn an automatic bid into the tournament.

Amherst (23-3), ranked No. 8 in the most recent poll, advanced to the third round with eight-point win over St. John Fisher on Saturday.

SUNY Poly, which trailed 9-0 in the first period by did get within two possessions late in the quarter, finished by shooting 32% and had 22 turnovers in the game. The team trailed 29-16 at the half.

Amherst pushed its lead to 21 late in the third quarter and limited SUNY Poly's ability to comeback.

SUNY Poly was led by junior guard/forward Molly Burdick, who had 12 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Lyric Jackson added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Amherst's Dani Valdez led all scorers with 18 points.
