SUNY Poly softball stars Critelli, Birmingham honored
The SUNY Polytechnic Institute softball team’s 10-game winning streak may have ended with Tuesday’s 12-4 loss at Cazenovia College, but not before pitcher Trinity Critelli (Frankfort/Frankfort-Schuyler) and second baseman Kimberly Birmingham (Camden) earned high honors for their contributions in the circle and at the plate.
Critelli was named the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) co-Pitcher of the Week after the senior struck out 29 of the 36 batters she faced while tossing back-to-back no-hitters, and Birmingham was named NAC Player of the Week after the sophomore went 7-for-11 with two doubles, a home run and seven RBIs during the Wildcats’ three-game weekend sweep of SUNY Canton.
In Friday’s 14-0, five-inning win, Critelli walked two and struck out 14, Birmingham had two hits, including a home run and three RBIs, and Aeron Hamm (Oriskany) had three hits.
In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Critelli threw a six-inning no-hitter, walking one and striking out 16 as the Wildcats shut out Canton 12-0. Birmingham had three more hits and an RBI and Hamm had two hits, including a home run and two RBIs.
In Game 2, pitcher Joy Stevens (Whitesboro) improved to 4-0 with a three-hitter in a six-inning, 8-0 win. Stevens did not walk a batter and struck out four, Hamm went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and two stolen bases, and Birmingham had two hits and three RBIs.
The series sweep left SUNY Poly 6-0 in the conference and 15-4 overall, and Critelli entered this week with a 10-1 record, a 0.90 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 69 2/3 innings. She also was leading all of NCAA Division III softball pitchers in strikeouts per seven innings (13.0).
But SUNY Poly’s winning streak and its first-place standing in the NAC’s Western Division standings ended Tuesday when Olivia Simone (Whitesboro) and Madison Cieslak (Whitesboro) helped Cazenovia remain unbeaten in the conference with a 12-4 win over Critelli and the visiting Wildcats.
Simone went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored and Cieslak had two hits and an RBI as Cazenovia (7-0 NAC, 14-13 overall) won its fifth straight game. Critelli (10-2) struck out 10 but allowed eight earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Mohawk Valley Community College pitcher Alivia Neff (Waterville) threw a two-hitter, did not walk a batter, and struck out nine in a five-inning, 8-0 win over Jamestown Community College. It was the third two-hitter of the season for Neff, who held Broome Community College to two hits and struck out 12 in a 4-1 win in her first start. She then pitched another two-hitter and struck out 13 as the Hawks outlasted SUNY Adirondack 3-2.
Neff, a sophomore with a 5-2 record, also shut out Monroe Community College 3-0. Teammate Brianna Grogg (Boonville/Adirondack), meanwhile, went 3-for-3 with an RBI in MVCC’s 13-12 loss to Community College of the Finger Lakes.
Herkimer County Community College’s Olivia Friend (Oneida) had two hits and three RBIs in an 11-2 win over Onondaga Community College. She had two more hits in the second game of that doubleheader as the Generals completed the sweep with an 11-8 win.
