VEDANO OLONA, Italy — The Syracuse University basketball team won its opener in a four-game exhibition tour of Italy, defeating All-Star Varese, 69-59, Monday.
Redshirt junior Elijah Hughes led the Orange with 18 points. Sophomore Buddy Boeheim and freshman Brycen Goodine each had 11 points. Junior center Bourama Sidibe led all players with 10 rebounds. He also scored eight points and three blocked shots.
The game was played in a four-quarter format. The Orange trailed early, 10-8, before back-to-back layins from Sidibe started an 8-0 run. Syracuse led at the end of first 10 minutes, 21-14.
All-Star Varese led 27-26 early in the second quarter but it would be their last lead of the game. Two baskets from Hughes sandwiched around rebound put-back from freshman Quincy Guerrier pushed the Orange back in front, 33-27. Syracuse did not trail again.
An All-Star Varese basket to start the fourth quarter made it 53-49, but the Orange rebuilt their margin to double digits.
A last-minute, baseline 3-pointer by freshman Joseph Girard III, helped secure the victory. It was his second three of the game.
Both teams were plagued by turnovers. Syracuse had 20 and All-Star Varese finished with 18.
