Students invited to annual Mohawk Valley Construction Career Day
ORISKANY — The Mohawk Valley Construction Industry Career Day, sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Construction Industry Development Committee, will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Oneida County Department of Public Works Building, 6000 Airport Road.
“This is an exciting opportunity for high school students (9-12 grade) to explore and experience the diverse careers available in the construction industry,” event organizers say, adding that “this year’s event will include interactive exhibits, trade industry displays and demonstration projects all requiring student involvement.”
The days’ activities will include the opportunity to operate heavy equipment and see skilled trades people demonstrate such tasks as bricklaying, concrete finishing, roofing, painting/finishes, welding, plumbing, electrical installation, materials testing and pipe laying.
Each year the event draws more than 400, organizers added.
“Construction Career Day is a great way to let the next generation know about the many opportunities available to them in the field. The jobs are plentiful, the salaries are above average, and there are many careers that will pay you while you train. A job in the construction industry is an option worth exploring,” said Tracy Page, executive director of the Mohawk Valley Builders Exchange.
The event will also feature several technology-based construction careers which will also be represented.
The MVCID consists of the Mohawk Valley Building Trades Council, Mohawk Valley Builders Exchange, Workforce Investment Board, Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Mohawk Valley, and Oneida-Herkimer-Madison, Madison-Oneida, and Herkimer BOCES.
