ROME — A corrections officer at the Mohawk Correctional Facility was hospitalized with several injuries after being attacked by an inmate armed with a metal fire extinguisher, according to the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association.

Authorities said the 34-year-old inmate was involved in a fight with another inmate inside the prison on May 2 when the corrections officer ordered them to stop. The inmates eventually complied and the officer stepped between them, at which point authorities said the first inmate grabbed a water can fire extinguisher and struck the officer in the back of the head.

The officer was knocked to the ground and authorities said the inmate started stomping on his arm, then stomped and kicked him in the body. A second officer arrived and used pepper spray to subdue the inmate and put him in handcuffs.

The first officer suffered injuries to his head, leg, lower back and arm, authorities said. He was treated at the St. Elizabeth campus of the Mohawk Valley Health System.

The inmate is currently serving a seven-year sentence out of Oswego County for drug and weapons possession, authorities said. He was convicted in 2020. Authorities said the inmate was found with a piece of broken glass fashioned into a weapon, and a second such weapon was found in his cell. The investigation is ongoing.
