Rome’s Campbell advances in U.S. Open qualifier

Matthew Campbell of Rome is still in the running to earn a second shot at the U.S. Open. He was one of five golfers at an Open qualifier at Shaker Ridge Country Club in Albany Monday who advanced to the final round of qualifying for the U.S. Open.

Campbell carded a 1-under par 70 to finish tied for second.

Jason Thresher of West Suffield, Connecticut, fired a 4-under par 67 for the top spot. Tying Campbell was Scott Berliner of Lake Luzerne, NY. Tied for fourth were Brandon Lacasse of Canada and Bryan Adkison of Boston, Massachusetts.

Campbell qualified for the U.S. Open once before, in 2017.

Also competing were Romans Wesley Cupp, who finished at plus-8, and Edward Marsh, who finished at plus-11.

The final qualifiers will be 36-hole events taking place May 23 and June 6.

This year’s U.S. Open will take place at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, June 16-19.
