South Lewis junior Bernard repeats as state champion

VERONA — South Lewis junior Brynn Bernard won the Class D girls race at the state cross country championships Saturday at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School.

Her time on the 5K course was 19:20.4 minutes. Bernard also won the Class D race last year.

Westmoreland eighth grader Emma Szarek was 11th in the Class D race. Mallory Kraeger, a junior from South Lewis, was 22nd. Fellow South Lewis junior Grace Bailey took 35th.

In the boys Class D race, Sauquoit Valley senior Kole Owens was fourth. Teammate Alex Keller, a sophomore, finished 27th. South Lewis sophomore MacCoy Maciejko was 40th. Sauquoit senior Matthew Hanna was 42nd.

Class A

Rome Free Academy senior Marlo Townsend finished 47th in the girls Class A field. Townsend will next compete in the Northeast Regional Championships on Nov. 26. The event is not affiliated with the New York State Public High School Athletic Assocation, and she will not be competing as an RFA runner.

There were not local runners in the top 50 in the boys race.

Class B

Seventh-grader Molly Myatt of Oneida was 10th. Alexandria French, a New Hartford freshman, was 34th.

There were not local runners in the top 50 in the boys race.

Class C

Adirondack freshman Cora Hinsdill was 14th. Her teammate, fellow freshman Eliana Pitts, was 38th.

There were not local runners in the top 50 in the boys race.
