Songwriter enjoys playing originals for appreciative Park Coffee House audience

HOLLAND PATENT  — Run by volunteers, Park Coffee House has provided a venue for new and seasoned performers alike to deliver quality entertainment for more than 35 years. Singer/songwriter John Cadley says he has performed there three or four times now and always found a receptive crowd.

“They have a great audience and it’s a pleasure to play there,” Cadley said. “It’s a very appreciative, listening audience who really like hearing original stuff. As a songwriter, that’s great for me.”

The Cadleys quartet, featuring Cadley on vocals, guitar and mandolin; his wife Cathy Cadley on vocals, guitar and banjo; John Dancks on acoustic bass; and Perry Cleaveland on vocals, mandolin and fiddle, play the second show of the Spring 2023 Concert Season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 1 at the Park Coffee House.

Cadley said their music isn’t strictly bluegrass but it is rooted in bluegrass traditions. There’s some Texas swing, a jazz ballad written for Cathy, some folk and some country, all with three-part harmonies. The performance will include some new songs the audience likely hasn’t heard yet, he added.

“I think the audience will respond to the rhythm even if they don’t know the songs,” Cadley assessed. “If the band has a good groove it almost doesn’t matter what song they play.”

They will have CDs available for sale, including John Cadley’s latest “I Never Knew,” which recently won a Sammy Award for Best Americana recording.

Cadley said they will work hard to entertain their Park Coffee House crowd.

“I see our job as giving the audience the best possible time, and we do it with a smile on our faces,” Cadley said. “We are there to get the audience involved and I’ll even tell some really bad jokes for some more fun. The audience will feel engaged and enjoy the variety.”

Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $12. Student admission is $5 and children 12 and younger are free.

There are homemade desserts, coffee, tea, cider and cocoa available for a donation before the performance and during the intermission. Proceeds benefit the local food pantry operated by Foothills Rural Community Ministry, the parent organization of Park Coffee House.
