SNAPSHOT: Hay fire in Western
A wagon full of hay burns in a field off Quaker Hill Road in the Town of Western Sunday afternoon. Local volunteers responded and doused the blaze. Tightly packed hay is known to spontaneously combust, and temperatures reached nearly 90 degrees on Sunday.

Town of Western firefighters douse a hay wagon fire on Quaker Hill Road at about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Temperatures reached nearly 90 degrees Sunday afternoon, and fire officials said hay is sometimes known to spontaneously combust when packed tightly in the heat. Once doused, authorities said the hay was dug out and spread across the ground to water down again.
