Silversmiths shake off slow start in NYCBL home victory


SHERRILL — After going down 4-0 to New York Collegiate Baseball League foe Genesee in the first inning, the Sherrill Silversmiths chipped their way back into the game to come back and win 10-9 at Noyes Park on Wednesday.

The Silversmiths scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead for good.

Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Dewey Roden doubled twice for Sherrill and Oneida graduate Mitchell Cavanagh picked up the win on the mound.

Cavanagh came on in relief of starter Joey Kemlage in the top of the seventh. Cavanagh worked an inning, giving up a run on three hits while striking out one.

Oneida graduate Rylan Baker worked the eighth and ninth innings to record the six out save.

Chris Turco finished with five RBIs for Sherrill in the win.

The Silversmiths are 9-7 overall and return to action tonight at 5 when they travel to Syracuse to take on the Spartans.
