Shirley Ripley Sutter, 96, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2020. She was born July 20, 1924, to Karl, Sr. and Susie Stratton Ripley in their home on E. Embargo St., Rome, NY.
On August 18, 1946, she married William E. Sutter in First Baptist Church in Rome, a loving union until his untimely death on November 22, 1958, leaving her to raise a teenager and two small children.
She graduated from RFA then worked for a time at Marcy Psychiatric Hospital until just before marriage. She worked at Rome Cable during World War II then became a stay at home mother until her children were older. She then did some babysitting, became a teacher’s aide at Denti Elementary School before taking a position at Jervis Library until her retirement in 1993.
She was a 50+ year member of the First Presbyterian Church, having taught Sunday School, was a member of Circle 5, worked on the annual Country Fair, worked in the Nursery and helped when needed.
She is survived by her son, Harry J. (Amada) Sutter; her daughter, Patricia A. Sutter; her grandchildren, Dawn Marie (Joel Mackiewicz) Sutter, Steven M. Sutter and Laura A. Bochniak. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Shirley Cole Sutter; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, William M. Sutter; brothers Karl, Jr. (Dorothy), Lawrence (Patricia), Robert (Betty), Alton, Franklin; and sisters, Katherine (Frederick) Burkhart and Betty (Anthony) Coniglio.
A memorial service will be held in the Spring.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Prince-Boyd & Hyatt Home for Funerals, Inc., 210 W. Court Street, Rome.
