Seven displaced after Sunday Utica fire
UTICA — Seven people were displaced by a blaze that started in the second floor of a Pleasant Street residence early Sunday.
One firefighter was sent to the hospital. The cause remains under investigation.
Temporary Utica Fire Chief John R. Kelly said the alarm for 139 Pleasant St. rang at 5:54 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke billowing from the building, with flames showing on the second floor and extending into the attic area.
Utica Police, National Grid and the American Red Cross also responded.
"Crews made an aggressive interior attack and primary searches for victims," said Kelly. "No victim were found and then crews worked to put out the fire on the second floor and then in the attic."
The chief said it took an "extensive overhaul" to quell pockets of flames. Crews remained on scene to assist the Fire Marshal's Office in the investigation, although a cause has not yet been determined, Kelly said.
"One firefighter was transported to the hospital for medical reasons," he said.
Volunteers from the Central & Northern New York Chapter of the American Red Cross provided immediate emergency aid to victims after Sunday morning's blaze.
The Red Cross provided financial assistance for necessities such as shelter, food and clothing to three adults and three children. Volunteers also offered emotional support and comfort kits containing personal care items, as well as stuffed animals for the children. In the coming days, Red Cross staff and volunteers will remain available to help those affected by the fire as they navigate the road to recovery.
