Tommy Sestito officially retired this week from playing professional hockey. His 11-year career is coming to an end and on behalf of our city we want Tom to know how proud of him we are.
He is married to the love of his life Jenna Crofoot who I might add is a 2008 Rome Catholic High graduate. They have a little boy and a baby on the way and Tom and Jenna want to settle down and raise their family in Rome. Over the years Jenna has picked up her life and traveled from England to Vancouver with no complaints. It’s time to come home to the city they love.
Did you know when Jenna attended Le Moyne College she worked her way through school being employed at Nunn’s Home Medical? Yes, I was her boss and she was a great employee.
Did you know that Tom’s dad (Pete) was also a great athlete for Rome Free Academy? He was one of the best quarterbacks in RFA history as well as a top notch center for Buddy Evans’ hoop team back in 1979.
Tom’s older brother Tim also played in the NHL ( New Jersey Devils) and is now a Rome fireman.
Why do I have this feeling that our community is getting some future outstanding Rome hockey coaches?
Victoria Sestito is a freshman and playing on the varsity field hockey team at Ithaca College. She is the little sister.
The Sestito family will go down in Rome history as one of the most athletic of all time for sure.
Pick of the week: Panthers 27, Cowboys 20. I am 2-0 in my picks so far this season. Carolina is going to be really good this year.
Geek of the week: Le’Veon Bell for not showing up to practice this week for the Steelers. May I remind him there is no “I” in the word team.
Did you know that in 1980 Coach Stan Evans was selected to be the head coach of the Central NY Region V Empire State team?
In 1992 I went to the tryout with my son Joey and was amazed with his organizational and coaching skills.
Brian Birnie won the Teugega County Club championship last week. He is only 20-years-old and might be the youngest golfer to ever win the title. His dad Tim is so proud of him.
Did you know he is currently on the Providence College golf team and is only a junior?
Did you know he has twin sisters (Lauren and Kate) who were outstanding athletes at RFA back in 2006? They also attended Providence.
RFA football coach Jake DerCola showed a lot of courage in the one-point loss last week to Nottingham. He went for the two-point conversion when he could have settled for a tie.
No coach or teacher ever won a game by what he knows. It’s what his players have learned that wins.
Our team is in good hands with Coach DerCola.
