Series of assaults reported at Marcy prison
MARCY — A series of violent incidents between inmates, corrections officers and other inmates at the Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy has been reported over the past three weeks, according to the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association.
Several makeshift weapons were also recovered from inmates and cells over this same period, union officials said in a statement.
- On Jan. 26, an inmate was slashed in the face by another inmate, requiring a trip to a local hospital. One inmate attacked another while being escorted by a corrections officer on Jan. 27. On Jan. 28, another inmate was slashed in the face by another inmate. This happened again on Feb. 6, officials said. The slashing instruments were never recovered.
- On Feb. 7, authorities said an inmate being escorted to an appointment attacked the corrections officers, elbowing one in the face. The inmate also tried to bite several officers. The inmate made several threats to kill the officers, officials said. One officer suffered a broken hand and another suffered a torn hamstring, authorities said. Both were hospitalized. Two other officers suffered injuries and remained on duty.
- On Feb. 8, an inmate suffered a broken jaw in a fight with another inmate. An inmate got into a fight with a corrections officer during his rehabilitation programming on Feb. 9.
- Four officers were injured on Feb. 12 when they entered an inmate's cell and he attacked, officials said, and an inmate suffered a broken nose when he was attacked by a fellow inmate in his cell on Feb. 13.
- During this same time period, there were at least two instances where inmates threw urine and feces on corrections officers. And several weapons were found, including sharpened tooth brushes, and heavy and sharp objects stuffed into tube socks, officials stated.
“This year is picking up where last year left off as violent acts in our prisons are on another record setting pace," said Bryan Hluska, central region vice president of NYSCOPBA.
"The working and living environments at Mid-State, which is a medium-security facility, are as dangerous as ever. Violent assaults, disgusting acts of throwing urine and feces at staff, and caches of deadly weapons being discovered are just some of the horrific conditions both staff and the incarcerated community face daily."
