Section III baseball playoffs: RFA’s season ends with Class AA first round loss to Baldwinsville

Section III baseball playoffs: RFA’s season ends with Class AA first round loss to Baldwinsville
Pitcher Gavin Miller held the Rome Free Academy offense in check in Baldwinsville’s Section III Class AA baseball first round playoff game Monday at home, an 8-1 win for the Bees.
The hosts, the eight seed, led 5-0 after two innings.
RFA, the nine seed, scored its run in the seventh inning, but the team was already down 8-0 by then.
RFA’s Donte Sparace had two hits including and a double and scored the lone run. Jake Premo had two hits as well. PJ Summa had a hit and drove in the run.
Brandon Sharron took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) in 1 1/3 innings on three hits and a walk.
Josh Leonard had three hits including a double with two RBIs and two runs for Baldwinsville.
RFA ends the season 9-10.
VVS loses by one
Vernon-Verona-Sherrill lost 11-10 at Chittenango in a Class B first round playoff game full of offense.
VVS scored a run in the second to lead 2-1 then Chittenango scored three to take its own lead. The Bears added five in the third but the Red Devils scored three in the fourth and three more in the fifth. By then it was 10-8 for the hosts. They added what would prove to be the game-winner in the sixth. Though VVS scored twice in the top of the seventh the team couldn’t find one more run to tie.
Dan Nagel had a single and two doubles with three RBIs and two runs for VVS. Jacob DeJesus had three hits, two RBIs and a run. Dylan Clute had three hits and two runs. Dan Merrill and Luke Winchell had two hits each.
VVS ends the season 3-14.
HP’s one big inning not enough
Holland Patent put up six runs in the top of the third inning but couldn’t hold on to the lead and lost to Bishop Grimes 9-6 Monday in the first round of Class B sectional play.
The Cobras responded to the HP rally with three runs to make the score 6-4. They added a run in the fourth then took the lead with four runs in the fifth.
Brino Kinsey, Matthew Govendo, Tristan Mancari and Brett Helmer each had multi-hit games for Bishop Grimes.
Statistics for HP were not submitted. The Golden Knights were (5-14-1) this season.
Herkimer knocks out Waterville
The Class C 12 seed Herkimer advanced to a second round matchup against fifth-seeded Westmoreland with a 9-2 home win over Waterville Monday.
Lucas Malinowski threw complete game for the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits and two walks. He stuck out 15.
At the plate, Malinowski had a hit and scored twice.
The Magicians scored two runs in the first and were up 6-0 after four innings. When Waterville scored its two in the fifth, Herkimer put the game away with three in the sixth.
David Bass had two hits, an RBI and scored three times for Herkimer. Robert Stone had a single and double with an RBI. Brady Saunders had a double, three RBIs and scored twice.
Waterville’s Braydon Decker suffered the loss in 2 1/3 innings. He allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits.
Cole Pearsall had three of Waterville’s six hits, including a double, and drove in a run.
Herkimer (9-9) played at Westmoreland (14-5) Tuesday. Game results were not available at press time.
Frankfort eliminates Sauquoit
Brayden Wisheart pitched a complete game shutout with 10 strikeouts to pick up a 9-0 win for Frankfort-Schuyler in the Class C first round Monday.
Wisheart singled and drove in two runs with the bat as well. Angelo DeSarro singled twice and tripled with two RBIs and Thomas Eck added a single, double and two RBIs. Jack McMurray singled and tripled.
Statistics for Sauquoit Valley were not submitted.
The Maroon Knights (6-10), the 15th seed, advanced to play second-seeded Beaver River Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.
Notre Dame falls
Notre Dame was elimated from the Class C playoffs with a 9-6 first round loss at Cooperstown Monday.
Cooperstown led 4-0 after two innings and 7-1 after three.
Ethan Kukenberger earned the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits with eight strikeouts in five innings. He also had three hits and four RBIs. Bryson Whitaker had four hits, two RBIs and four runs scored.
Statistics for Notre Dame were not submitted.
Cooperstown (6-9), the 14 seed, played at third-seeded Little Falls (15-3) Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.
