SYLVAN BEACH — Members of the sheriff’s Marine Patrol and troopers from State Police at Oneida continued their search this morning for a swimmer reported missing off the South Bay of Oneida Lake early Friday evening.
Deputy Ryan C. Fleury said at about 6:40 p.m. the sheriff’s Marine Patrol received a call reporting a missing swimmer in the South Bay area.
The Marine Unit responded within minutes to begin search efforts.
Dive teams and other personnel, including assistance from Oriskany Fire Department, searched for the swimmer until operations were ceased due to the dark, Fleury said. Cleveland and Sylvan Beach fire departments also responded, while North Bay and Vienna were placed on stand-by.
Deputies said the unidentified person went swimming off a boat, went underwater and did not come back up.
The search resumed this morning, with state police divers taking to the water.
Sheriff’s officials said the swimmer’s identification will not be released at this time.
