Search begins for new superintendent in New York Mills

NEW YORK MILLS — The search for a new superintendent of the New York Mills Union Free School District is under way, according to Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES.

An important part of the process is gathering community input about the attributes, experiences and desired skills for a new superintendent, an announcement from the district and its search consultant said.

Focus groups are one way to solicit the information, as well as identify priorities that the new superintendent should focus on in their first year in the district, the announcement added.

Search Consultant Dr. Patricia N. Kilburn will hold a series of focus groups for New York Mills UFSD parents/caregivers, alumni and community members on Wednesday, May 18 between 5-9 p.m. via Zoom.

Participation in the focus groups will be by registration only and will require about one hour.

In order to best accommodate participants’ schedules, the focus groups will be held virtually, and because focus groups are intended to be representative of a larger population, participation will be limited to 55 total participants.

Anyone interested in participating in a parent/caregiver, alumni and community member focus group should complete the registration form at www.newyorkmills.org/focusgroup or call Stefany Scharf, board clerk, at 315-768-8127 by no later than 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 11.

During registration, participants will be asked to identify as a parent/caregiver, alumnus or community member.

Participants will be randomly selected for focus group time slots via lottery according to the three categories, according to the announcement.

All registrants will receive an email from suptforums@oneida-boces.org by close of business on Friday, May 13, confirming the time of the focus group they have been selected to participate in.

Anyone unable to participate is encouraged to participate in the public, online survey, the announcement added.

Additional focus groups for middle/secondary students and district staff members have been arranged directly through the New York Mills UFSD.

A public, online survey, including the same questions from the focus groups, will be made available on the district website www.newyorkmills.org, Facebook page and Twitter feed beginning on Monday, May 23.
