School board to review presentations on bus proposals

Presentations from companies submitting proposals for the Rome school district’s next transportation contract for its main student busing services are the only agenda item for a Board of Education meeting Thursday.

The board meets at 4 p.m. Thursday at the school district office, 409 Bell Road, and some members might participate remotely according to board President Paul Hagerty. The meeting is not open for attendance by the public because of COVID-19 considerations, and is anticipated to move to a closed executive session for “discussion of a proposed negotiation of a transportation contract,” according to the district office.

The meeting will include “presentations from the different companies that are putting in an RFP (request for proposal) for service,” said district Superintendent Peter C. Blake. Hagerty said no board votes are anticipated at the session.

The district’s plans for an RFP process for the busing contract were discussed at a board meeting in December. The current contract expires in June, and is with Birnie Bus Service which has been the district’s main busing provider for about 70 years including through an RFP process about 10 years ago that was followed by extensions. District Assistant Superintendent for Operations and Management Robert Mezza Jr. said in December the state Education Department wants school districts to not renew contracts after 10 years and to instead seek new proposals.
