Schenectady officer charged after bar fight


A detective with the Schenectady Police Department is accused of getting into a bar fight on Varick Street in Utica early Thursday morning.

Utica Police said Steven Nelson, 33, of Schenectady, struck an employee at the Celtic Harp at about 12:15 a.m. Thursday. The employee was not injured. Nelson was off-duty at the time.

Nelson is charged with one count of second-degree harassment, a violation, police said. He was released on an appearance ticket. According to Schenectady police officials, an internal investigation is underway. The City of Schenectady is located in Schenectady County, directly north of Albany.

Schenectady Police Chief Eric S. Clifford released a statement:

“The Schenectady Police Department prides itself on being professional, trustworthy and transparent. My expectations are that all of our officers conduct themselves as consummate professionals, both on and off duty. While I do not condone the actions of Detective Nelson, I urge the public to continue to support and trust the Schenectady Police Department and its Officers.”
