Saluting the ski patrol

As winter draws to a close, there’s always a special event at Woods Valley ski center that revives our spirits and is for a good cause.

This year, the 27th Annual Family Fun Day and Chicken Barbecue hosted by Woods Valley’s all-volunteer ski patrol will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at Woods Valley Ski Area, Rt. 46 N., Westernville.

The Woods Valley volunteer ski patrol hosts this one major fundraiser each year to raise money to replenish first aid supplies, purchase new toboggans and on-the-hill equipment, and to maintain communication devices.

The day features exciting activities both on and off the slopes, including food, music, and family favorites, such as the third annual Cardboard Sled Derby starting at 11 a.m. in the tubing area.

Sleds are built out of cardboard for speed and show, showcasing some unique, fun and creative entries. This event has grown to become a favorite for participants and spectators.

A craft-beer tasting will be held between 2 and 6 p.m. Purchase a punch card, with a valid ID, and sample five different beers from area distributors. There will be live music by two popular local groups in the Tap Room 46. Nina’s Brew entertains from 2–5 p.m. and Follow the Muse takes the stage from 7–10 p.m.   The event’s popular chicken barbeque begins at noon. Additional activities include ski patrol toboggan rides and a Gold Rush treasure hunt for all children. And, the patrol thanks the many area businesses and organizations for their donation of prizes and gift certificates including items from area pro shops.

So, for a good time for a good cause, enjoy the annual family fun day.
