Gabe Syrotinski’s second period goal was enough for New Hartford when combined with Mike Vetter’s 26-save shutout over Whitesboro Tuesday in boys ice hockey.
The two Division 2 rivals squared off in Whitesboro.
Kris Matthews made 28 saves in a hard luck loss for the Warriors.
New Hartford improves to 5-4-1 overall and 2-2 in the league. The Spartans host Oswego in the league at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Whitesboro falls to 3-8 overall and 3-3 in the league. The Warriors host Cazenovia in the league at 7 tonight.
Black Knights skate to a tie
The Rome Free Academy boys ice hockey team tied Fayetteville-Manlius 3-3 on the road Tuesday in a Division 1 matchup.
RFA scored a first period goal. The Black Knights scored twice in the second and the Hornets scored three times. Neither team could find a goal in the third period or overtime.
Jake Premo scored and had an assist for RFA. Nate Van Wie and Carmen Orton also scored. Tyler Wilson had a pair of assists. Earning an assist each were Tanner Spina, Logan Waterman and Jimmy DeAngelo.
Donte Sparace stopped 29 shots to help RFA to the tie.
F-M’s Noah Chen scored twice and teammate Greg Manzi had a goal. Chris Finger made 37 saves for F-M.
RFA is now 5-2-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the league. The Knights host non-league opponent Guilderland at 5 p.m. Friday.
HP gets narrow swim win over RFA
The Holland Patent boys swimming and diving team edged out RFA with a 53-49 win Tuesday in its home pool.
Holland Patent won two of the three relays. The 200 freestyle relay group of Jarimia Howe, Mason Rasmussen, Joseph Erny and Dariusz Sargent won in 1:44.65. The 400 freestyle relay group of Howe, Rasmussen, Jake Smith and Sargent won in 4:14.96.
HP’s individual event winners were Sargent in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.20 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.03; Howe in the 100 freestyle in 53.54; and Nicholas Race in the 500 freestyle in 6:29.63.
RFA’s 200 medley relay team of Vincent Klepadlo, Sean Feeney, Caden Hannafon and Jack Wood won in 2:00.20.
Klepadlo won the 200 freestyle in 2:10.43; Wood won the 50 freestyle in 25.32; Hannafon won the 100 butterfly in 1:13.33; and Feeney won the 100 backstroke in 1:08.87.
William D’Agata of RFA won the diving event.
HP improved to 5-3. The Golden Knights swim at New Hartford against the hosts and Sherburne-Earlville at 5 tonight.
RFA is now 4-3. The Black Knights swim at Cooperstown against the hosts and Oneida at 5 tonight.
Auburn erupts early in victory over RFA
The Rome Free Academy boys basketball team had four players in double digits Tuesday but Auburn’s offense was still too much in an 84-78 non-league win over the host Black Knights.
Uzziah Grimes led RFA with 19 points. Deandre Neal scored 16 points, Surafia Norries had 13 and Jack Lawless scored 10.
Auburn’s DeSean Strahan led all scorers with 30 points. Tony Borges III had 24.
RFA trailed 23-15 after a quarter and 50-34 at the half.
RFA plays Tri-Valley League foe Camden on the road at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Notre Dame runs away from Central Valley
Ella Trinkaus had a double-double as Utica-Notre Dame girls basketball beat host Central Valley Academy 67-25 Tuesday in the TVL.
Up 14-10 after a quarter, the Jugglers outscored the Thunder 20-3 in the second quarter to pull away.
Trinkaus scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Vita Waters had 10 points and four rebounds.
CVA’s Izzy Terziaski led all scorers with 17 points and added 11 rebounds for her own double-double.
Notre Dame hosts Oneida at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the league.
CVA hosts Whitesboro at 7 p.m. Friday in the TVL.
Bulldogs drops first match
The Westmoreland boys volleyball team lost its season opener at Canastota 3-0 Tuesday in Section III league play.
The Raiders won the sets 25-8, 25-13 and 25-8.
Canastota’s Caleb Notaro had nine kills, seven digs and three aces. Jesse DeMaintanan had nine kills.
The Bulldogs were led by Rylan Kryczkowski with three kills and three digs.
Westmoreland hosts Oneida in the league at 7 p.m. Friday.
Canastota plays at Little Falls at 6 tonight in the league.
Spartans shut out VVS
The New Hartford girls volleyball team shut out visiting Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 3-0 Tuesday in the TVL.
The Spartans won the sets 25-8, 25-8 and 25-12.
Elise Courto had eight kills, nine digs and three blocks for New Hartford. Makenzie Desmarais had seven kills, six digs and five aces. Abby O’Connor had 18 assists and three digs.
Statistics for VVS were not provided.
New Hartford hosts East Syracuse Minoa at 7 p.m. Monday.
VVS plays at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Oneida in the league.
Warriors blank Raiders
Whitesboro girls volleyball won 3-0 at Thomas R. Proctor High School in Utica Tuesday in the TVL.
The Warriors won sets 25-13, 25-11 and 25-12.
Kylee Decarr had five kills, six digs and a pair of aces for Whitesboro. Tessa Nash had 13 assists, two kills and two digs.
For Proctor, Summer Woo had five kills and two blocks. Ebby Sha had eight assists and two digs.
Whitesboro hosts Holland Patent at 7 tonight in the league.
Proctor hosts Camden at 5:30 tonight in the TVL.
