ROUNDUP: RFA hockey tops Mohawk Valley; RFA girls cruise to win
John Sharrino scored twice and assisted on another goal and Jake Premo added a goal and an assist to help the Rome Free Academy boys hockey team open the season on a positive note.
Jacob Swavely and Tyler Wilson also scored and Braeden Sturtevant totaled 12 saves to help RFA score a 5-1 Section III Division I win over the Mohawk Valley Jugglers on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica.
Jimmy DeAngelo, Carmen Orton and Logan Waterman each added assists for RFA.
Mohawk Valley trailed 2-1 after one period following a goal from Luke Williams.
RFA added two goals in the second period and another in the third to pull away.
The Black Knights are next scheduled to play at 8:15 Wednesday at Cicero-North Syracuse.
Mohawk Valley, which was winless last season, will try again for its first win at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Fulton.
Clinton boys fall
The Clinton boys hockey team scored four times in the second period — and totaled more than 50 shots in the game — but ultimately dropped their regular-season opener on the road Thursday.
Oswego scored three times in each the first and second period to earn a 7-5 victory over Clinton in the Section III Division II game at Crisafulli Rink.
Aiden Soika scored and added two assists, Caden Hinderling scored twice and Nolan O’Brien and Max Williams also scored for Clinton.
Brayden Miller had a hat trick and an assist and Ian Cady scored twice and assisted on another in support of goalie Riley Wallace, who totaled 46 saves for Owsego (1-0).
Clinton’s John Falbo had 16 saves in 24 minutes of action. Will O’Brien totaled seven saves in 27 minutes.
Clinton is set to play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at rival Whitesboro at Whitestown Community Rink.
RFA girls cruise to win
RFA senior Amya McLeod totaled 26 points to help the Black Knights overwhelm host West Genesee in a 66-30 non-league victory Thursday.
RFA led 17-1 after one quarter and 35-9 at half.
McLeod had a pair of 3-pointers and 10 free throws as part of the effort. Also scoring in double figures were Alysa Jackson, who had 15 points with help from three 3-pointers. Mia Mirabelli contributed 14.
RFA next plays at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday against visiting Liverpool in a non-league affair.
Dolgeville boys top Waterville
Dolgeville’s Michael Blaskey totaled 23 points while Waterville’s Tyson Maxam led all scorers with 25 as visiting Dolgeville topped Waterville 63-55 on Thursday.
Blaskey also had nine steals for Dolgeville in the team’s season-opening win. TJ Rankins added 14 points.
Maxam also had six rebounds and six assists for Waterville (1-1). Hayden Dumas had nine points and seven rebounds.
Dolgeville next gets a visit from Oriskany with the game scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday.
Waterville is next scheduled to play Hamilton at 7 p.m. Monday.
Little Falls boys win
Four players scored in double figures for the Little Falls boys basketball team in a 72-47 win over visiting New York Mills on Thursday.
Coltan Frederick had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Jack Morrotti had 16 points, Brayton Langdon had 13 and Dom Izzo added 15 for Little Falls (2-0) in the non-league win.
Jaydon Dietz led all scorers with 20 points for New York Mills (0-2). Timmy Kirilko added 10.
Little Falls is next scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Monday at Cooperstown.
NYM’s next opponent is visiting Frankfort-Schuyler. That game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
New Hartford extends winning streak
The New Hartford girls volleyball team dropped the first set Thursday before winning the next three against East Syracuse-Minoa for a 3-1 victory in the Tri-Valley League match.
New Hartford lost 25-21 in the first game before winning 25-17, 25-7 and 25-22 to improve to 2-0 this season. The team won the Section III Class A title last season and in 2019.
The team has won 21 consecutive games after finishing 19-0 last season.
On Thursday, junior Elise Courto had 14 goals, two blocks, 15 digs and 11 aces to help New Hartford. Senior Micaela Magno had 22 digs and six aces.
Junior Abby O’Connor added two digs, 23 set assists and three aces. Senior Makenzie Desmarais contributed 10 kills, a block, 11 digs and four aces.
New Hartford is set to play its third of four consecutive road games to open the season at 7 p.m. Monday at Whitesboro. The teams met in the sectional final last season.
No stats were provided for ES-M.
Oneida rallies for first win
The Oneida girls volleyball team dropped the first set, but won the last three to earn a 3-1 victory over host Vernon-Verona-Sherrill on Thursday.
VVS won the first set 25-20 before Oneida won 25-20, 25-20 and 25-1.
Junior Ella McKay had a kill, 4 digs, 22 set assists and two aces for Oneida (1-1). Senior Riley Hewitt had 12 digs, a set assist and two aces. Classmate Katie Kinney added seven kills, seven digs and two aces.
Senior Alana Burgett had a dig, 11 set assists and two aces for VVS (0-2). Classmate Kendal Lehnen had two kills, two digs, 11 set assists and three aces. Junior Lily Brown finished with three kills, 11 digs and three aces.
VVS is set to play at Dolgeville’s tournament Saturday.
Oneida’s next game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday against visiting Holland Patent.
Whitesboro tops RFA
The Whitesboro girls volleyball team won the first, third and fourth games Thursday to score a 3-1 Tri-Valley League Colonial Division win over visiting RFA.
Whitesboro is 2-0 this season while RFA is 1-1.
Whitesboro junior Tessa Nash had a kill, seven digs, 32 set assists and five aces. Senior Riley Collis had 11 kills, two blocks, five digs, two set assists and two aces. Classmate Kylee DeCarr added 10 kills, 18 digs and three aces.
For RFA, junior Elizabeth Hanba had 15 kills, 27 digs and an ace. Senior Jenavieve Cianfrocco had 21 digs and classmate Alyce Frost had a kill, 21 digs and two set assists.
RFA’s next game is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday against Thomas R. Proctor.
