The sixth-seeded Westmoreland/Oriskany boys soccer team got all it needed early in a Section III Class B first round game Wednesday against Cazenovia.
Senior Jesse Sweet scored on a breakaway in the fifth minute and classmate Jack Tamburino added a penalty kick in the 12th minute as the Bulldogs went on to win 6-1 over 11th-seeded Cazenovia.
Tamburino finished with a hat trick and two assists and Sweet finished with two goals for Westmoreland/Oriskany (15-2-0). The team has won eight consecutive games since a 2-1 non-league loss to Hamilton on Sept. 26.
In the second half Wednesday, the Bulldogs extended the lead with three goals before Alex Dolly scored on a direct kick from 25 yards out with sixteen minutes remaining for Cazenovia (7-10).
Westmoreland/Oriskany sophomore midfielder Nathan Clough followed with a goal on a volley off of a corner kick by Tamburino. Cazenovia’s Jacob Szalach finished with 10 saves.
Senior David Cronauer finished with eight saves for Westmoreland/Oriskany. The team has allowed nine total goals this season.
The Bulldogs advance to play Friday.
West Canada Valley girls advance
Twelve-seed West Canada Valley got a big upset win in the opening round of the Section III Class D girls soccer playoffs Tuesday with a 2-1 win in overtime at fifth seed Fabius-Pompey.
West Canada fell behind on a first half goal by McKenna Johnson on an assist from Maddy Haaf. But they rallied with a goal in the second half to tie then won it in overtime.
Leila Selimovic and Gabriella Schrader each scored for West Canada. Klohie Bolton stopped nine shots in goal to earn the win.
Fabius goalie Miranda Putnam made eight saves.
West Canada improves to 7-9 and will play a road game against four seed Copenhagen (13-2-1) at 5 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.
Twelve-seed HP gets playoff win over Canastota
The Holland Patent girls soccer team scored a pair of first half goals en route to a 2-1 win, upsetting fifth-seeded Canastota on the road in the opening round of the Section III Class B playoffs Tuesday.
The 12th-seeded Golden Knights got goals from Makenzie Stalker and Faith Zylinsky. Stalker and Brianna Mullins had an assist each.
In goal for HP, Isabella Hobin made five stops to earn the win.
Statistics for Canastota were not available.
HP improves to 8-8-1 and will now play at four seed Skaneateles (12-3-2) Thursday. The game time had not be announced at press time.
Sauquoit opens with big win
The Sauquoit Valley girls soccer team — the three seed in the Class C playoffs — crushed 14-seed Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Tuesday.
The hosts won 11-0, with nine different players scoring at least one goal each.
Olivia Kalil and Ella Schiavo had a pair of goals each. Also scoring once each were Celena Sperbeck, Paige Kuhn, Kaitlyn Corr, Emma Yerman, Addison Lazarek, Kamryn Yerman and Tristyn Williams. Lazarek added three assists and Corr had two. Williams had an assist as well.
Sauquoit improves to 14-2-1 and will host the 11th seed, Dolgeville (8-6-1) at 5 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.
Red Devils fall in girls soccer
Mexico won 2-1 at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Tuesday, a win by the nine seed over the eight seed in the opening round of the Section III Class B playoffs.
Mexico scored the lone goal of the first half. Both teams scored in the half.
Mexico’s Grace O’Gorman and Adria Ariola scored. Teammate Caprice Cuituli stopped nine shots.
Laiken Kiser scored the lone goal for the Red Devils, which ends the season 9-6.
Clinton eliminated in girls soccer
The Clinton girls soccer team lost 4-0 at top-seeded Westhill in the opening round of the Section III Class B playoffs Tuesday.
Warriors’ goalie Deanna Heintz made seven saves. She allowed three first half goals and one in the second half.
Lily Kinsella scored twice and Ashley Bolesh and Hannah Goodness scored a goal each.
Lizzie Horner made five saves and Kate Bendall made one in split time.
Clinton ends the season 7-8-1.
Westhill (14-2-1) will host nine seed Mexico (10-4-3) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.
