Isabelle Dobson scored the game-winning goal with 1 minute and 29 seconds remaining in overtime to help Oswego score a 4-3 non-league win over Clinton on Monday at Nexus Center in Utica.
Oswego had been winless in its past nine games against Clinton, which features players from a few schools in the Mohawk Valley.
Mischa Palmitesso scored two goals and Mia Fierro added another for Oswego.
Junior Kelsey Fuller, senior Alyssa Nardslico and and sophomore Mackinley Ronan each scored for Clinton. Sophomore Alexa Thompson added an assist.
Sophomore goaltender Casey Clausen finished with 19 saves.
Clinton also opened the 2021-22 season with a setback. Last season, the team finished 10-2-1 overall with a loss to Skaneateles in the Section III title game.
Clinton is next scheduled to play Skaneateles tonight at 7 at Nexus Center in Utica.
New Hartford tops CVA
The New Hartford girls volleyball season opened with 3-0 Tri-Valley League win over Central Valley Academy.
Game scores were 25-12, 25-15 and 25-20 on Monday.
New Hartford, the defending Section III Class A winter champion, is in the Colonial Division while CVA is in the Pioneer Division.
The Spartans were led by by senior outside hitter Makenzie Desmarais, who had nine kills, five digs and three aces. Junior setter Abby O’Connor totaled 22 assists, four digs and one aces. Junior outside hitter Elise Courto added seven kills, a block, six digs and three aces.
No stats were provided for CVA (0-1).
New Hartford plays its second of four consecutive scheduled road games to open the season Thursday. The team visits East Syracuse-Minoa at 6:30 p.m.
RFA opens with win
The Rome Free Academy girls volleyball team opened the season with a 3-0 TVL victory over host Oneida on Monday.
Game scores were 25-22, 25-12, 25-16.
RFA was helped by senior Jenavieve Cianfrocco, who had 20 digs, a kill and an ace. Junior Kassity Cruz had four kills, 20 digs and three aces. Junior Elizabeth Hanba added five kills, 12 digs and three aces. Sophomore Thylia Keoviengsamay had four kills, seven digs, 17 set assists and three aces.
Oneida senior Katie Kinney had four kills, eight digs and three aces. Junior Ella McKay added 11 set assists.
RFA is slated to play at Whitesboro at 7 p.m. Thursday. Oneida is set to play at VVS at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Whitesboro scores victory
The Whitesboro girls volleyball team opened the season with a 3-0 TVL victory over host Vernon-Verona-Sherrill on Monday.
Whitesboro is in the Colonial Division while VVS is in the Pioneer.
Game scores were 25-19, 25-15, 25-14
Whitesboro leaders were junior Tessa Nash one dig, 22 set assists as well as senior Riley Collis nine kills, two set assists, two digs and an ace. Senior Kylee DeCarr added 8 kills, 5 digs, 2 aces.
VVS was helped by senior Alana Burgett, who had a kill and 10 set assists. Senior Marga Villahermosa added 12 digs and an ace.
Proctor edges HP
The Thomas R. Proctor girls volleyball team earned a 3-2 TVL win over host Holland Patent on Monday.
Game scores were 24-26, 25-21, 21-25, 25-15 and 15-13.
Proctor senior Ebby Sha had a kill, a block, 18 set assists and seven aces while classmate Tha Dah Kyet had seven kills and five aces. Senior Tiana Palmer added five kills, two digs and five aces.
Holland Patent was helped by junior Emily Paladino, who had five kills, 13 digs and a set assist. Classmate Renae Cellamare added 12 kills and two aces. Fellow junior Isabella Makarchuk had 12 kills, two blocks, a dig, a set assist and eight aces.
Proctor is set to play a non-league contest at 7 p.m. tonight at Carthage. Holland Patent’s next game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Oneida.
Camden volleyball falls
The Camden girls volleyball team dropped its season-opening match to visiting East Syracuse-Minoa, 3-0, Monday.
Game scores were 25-20, 25-19, 25-10.
Camden was helped by Olivia Hooker who had two kills, five digs and two aces. Leah Runion added six digs and an ace while Hailey Gladle had two kills, four digs and two blocks.
Natalie Peterson had 26 assists, an ace and a kill and Akuot Kuany added 12 kills and two blocks for ES-M (1-0).
Camden is next set to play visiting Central Valley Academy in a TVL Pioneer Division contest at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Mt. Markham wins first game
Mount Markham opened the season with a 3-0 Center State Conference win over Frankfort-Schuyler.
Game scores were 25-17, 25-7, 25-3.
Junior Haley Otis had 12 aces and a set assist while sophomore Addison Jones added a kill, 6 set assists and six aces.
Mount Markham’s next game is set for 7 p.m. Monday against non-league opponent Utica Academy of Science.
No stats were provided for Frankfort-Schuyler (0-1), which is next set to play at 7 p.m. Friday against Owen D. Young.
ODY tops Herkimer
ODY edged Herkimer with game scores of 25-12, 21-25, 20-25, 27-25, 15-5.
No stats were provided for Herkimer (0-1). The team is next set to play set to play visiting Old Forge at 7 tonight.
Oriskany girls basketball wins first game
The Oriskany girls basketball team led 22-18 at halftime and outscored Oriskany 17-13 in the fourth quarter to earn a 52-44 victory over Sauquoit Valley.
Senior guard Jordyn Coleman led Oriskany with 22 points with help from five 3-pointers. Senior Chloe Seamons and classmate Kaylee Burnop each chipped in eight points.
Sauquoit junior guard Alaina Weaver led all scorers with 26 points with help from five 3s. She also had four steals.
Freshman guard Makayla Land finished with a double-double totaling 15 points and 14 rebounds. She also had seven assists and three steals.
