Rome Sports Hall of Fame accepting nominations
ROME — The Rome Sports Hall of Fame is accepting nominations for individuals to be considered for induction.
Applications and instructions are available on the city’s Parks and Recreation Department website at www.romenewyork.com. Nomination forms may also be picked up at the department at City Hall and will be available at the Hall of Fame when it reopens for the season in late May.
According to the Hall’s guidelines, individuals to be nominated must either be from the City of Rome or have a long-term association with the area and be commonly associated with Rome by the public.
They must also meet one of the following criteria:
Is or was an outstanding athlete in high school, college, amateur or professional sports;
Is or was a coach or manager who has made a significant contribution to sports;
As an honoree in the “contributor” category, is an individual whose efforts and talents provided leadership, administration, organization, direction, inspiration, positive contributions and motivation in the furtherance of sports programs, teams and athletes.
Nominations are also being accepted for the Hall of Fame’s William J. Coughlin Memorial. The memorial is named for the longtime Rome Free Academy coach and athletic director who died after being hit by a car while training for a marathon. The Coughlin Memorial was established to recognize Rome athletes whose “light shined far too briefly.” This award is for someone who excelled in athletics but whose life was cut short.
It is not necessary to re-submit nominations for the Hall of Fame or the Coughlin Memorial, as previously submitted nominations are kept on file. Additions or addendums to nominations are welcome. To be considered for this year a nomination or addendum must be submitted by March 15.
Nominations will also be taken for the Ellie Bruce Exceptional Team of Excellence Award which salutes a standout team from the past. The award is sponsored by Bruce, a member of the Hall of Fame selection committee.
Selection committee members are co-chairmen Bill Fleet and Todd Dewan along with Fran Lisewski, Carl Eilenberg, Ellie Bruce, Chris Bouton, Linda Harjung, Jeanette Dominic, Stan Evans, Paul Gigliotti, Brian Adey and Darrell Thomas.
The 2023 Hall of Fame awards dinner will be held on Sunday, July 30, at Vernon Downs Casino Hotel and will be preceded by a reception at the Rome Sports Hall of Fame, 5790 Rome-New London Road.
