Rome man accused of trying to break into police car
ROME — A 30-year-old man is accused of trying to break into a Rome Police Department squad car on North Madison Street, according to the Rome Police Department.
Police said Tyrus M. Magistro, of Rome, was seen trying to break into a patrol car that was parked on North Madison Street around 9 p.m. Oct. 11. Rome Police and Rome Fire were at the Madison Plaza Apartments for a welfare check, and a firefighter spotted Magistro trying to break into the vehicle.
Officers responded to the scene and the firefighter said Magistro had gone to a nearby convenience store. Police said Magistro was causing a scene inside the store, demanding other customers buy him condoms.
Magistro left the store and police followed him as he walked in the middle of a nearby street, yelling at the officers, police said. Following a brief foot pursuit, police said Magistro was taken into custody and charged with disorderly conduct.
Evidence about the attempted vehicle break-in was forwarded to the District Attorney's Office for review, and police said a warrant was issued for attempted third-degree grand larceny. Magistro was located on Friday, Dec. 16 and he was taken into custody on the warrant.
Magistro is scheduled to appear in Rome City Court.
