Rome Lions take pride in new bench program additions

ROME — The Rome Lions Club recently completed a joint service project with the Henry P. Smith Post No. 24 American Legion with the installation of two benches at Griffiss Business and Technology Park.

Through the Lions’ plastic recycling efforts, Trex Corporation was able to build and provide two benches and deliver them to Rome. The benches were recently installed at the B-52 site at the park.

It takes 500 pounds of plastic recycling materials for the construction of one bench. To date, the Lions have acquired and delivered five benches to the Rome community. The project was reported by Louis DiMarco Jr., club service chairperson, and Mary Chmielewski, Lions president.

“The Lions are appreciative of the assistance provided by Veterans Council officers, David Riley, Leonard Dutton, Michael Grogan and Thomas Kenealy,” said Chmielewski. “The Henry P. Smith Post is responsible for the up-keep and maintenance of the B-52 site.”

Preparation for the project was provided by Steve DiMeo and Frank Sanzone of Griffiss Local Development Corporation. The GLDC constructed concrete pads so that the benches could be permanently anchored to the site for years to come.

The project originated when it was brought to the attention of the Lions that the memorial was missing seating for people visiting the B-52 site. It will now allow veterans and other visitors to sit down, relax and admire the plane and its Rome heritage, Chmielewski said.

Rome Lions Club has been serving Rome for more than 70 years. Its community programs include sight and hearing conservation, diabetes awareness, youth outreach, environmental issues and helping when a community need arises.
