As Earth Day approaches, Rome Clean and Green is launching its 20th year of participating in the national Keep America Beautiful Great American Clean Up.
Once observed as a single day, it is now a series of efforts that kick off on Saturday and run through May 31.
During this time, residents can join one of many scheduled community clean up events, come out on the city-wide Day of Action on May 5, or go out on their own and do some sprucing up. Rome Clean and Green supports these efforts by offering bags, gloves and tools, as well as collaborating with the city of Rome to have litter and debris that is collected picked up and brought to the landfill or recycling center. The group asks that anyone participating in an event report their results back to the organization.
This weekend, the first event will be held Saturday, hosted by the Rome Historical Society/Friends of the Fort along the Erie Canal in west Rome. Additional events include a clean up at the Rome Art and Community Center on the same day, at Delta Lake State Park with Mohawk Valley Community College volunteers on May 5 and the annual Jervis Recycling Day on May 23.
The group’s community Day of Action, now known as the Clean Your Block Party, will be held on Saturday, May 5, beginning at 9 a.m.
“This is the day that we strongly encourage people to come out and join us in making an impact throughout the city. We’ll be working with Positively Rome to create a really fun vibe while doing a lot of good all over town,” said Clean and Green Executive Director Tanya Davis.
Groups interested in cleaning up that day will pick up materials at a common meeting point, and then be assigned an area to remove litter.
Later in the day, a celebration with food trucks and music is being planned. More details about this event are coming soon.
Participants are invited to form a team of family members, friends, businesses, civic organizations or other interested groups to be a part of these efforts.
While the main focus is litter removal, there are many other ways to keep Rome beautiful, including beautifying parks, trails and recreation areas, cleaning shorelines and waterways, reducing waste and increasing recycling, planting trees, and building and maintaining community gardens.
