ROME — The Rome branch of the YMCA of the Greater Tri-Valley had added Sean Burton to its leadership team as a program director.

As program director for the health and fitness and youth, teen and family departments, Burton will ensure the branch’s programs and services meet the diverse needs of members and the community.

A USAW (Team USA Weightlifting) Strength and Conditioning Sports Performance coach and personal trainer, Burton is known for his years of experience coaching college basketball and running youth basketball clinics. He was previously head Men’s Basketball coach at Ithaca College.

“Sean has strong ties to the Mohawk Valley and his extensive experiences with people of varied ages and levels of fitness make him a wonderful addition to the YMCA team,” said Bruce Hairston, Rome YMCA branch director. “Sean is certified to teach first aid and CPR, and his certifications in physical activity, leisure and safety allow him to develop and instruct a wide range of activities and programs, all of which are an asset to our organization and mission.”

Burton earned his bachelor’s of science degree in Sports and Exercise Science from Ithaca College in 2009 and is currently enrolled in Ithaca’s master’s of Science Sports Psychology program.

In his new position, Burton is also responsible for recruiting staff with diverse backgrounds and experience and managing the program budget to meet fiscal objectives. In addition, he will continue to develop collaborative relationships with community organizations.

“I have always had a strong connection to the communities where I have worked and lived,” Burton said. “I look forward to the opportunity to get to know the people in Rome and surrounding areas to build relationships and have a positive impact on as many people as possible.”

He said, “My goal is to be an added value to an already excellent and valuable organization and help build on the programs and activities offered here at the Rome Y.”
